Daily a few ships will sail for the public cruises. The other ships are exclusively reserved for corporate hospitality. Public cruises will depart at different times than the corporate cruises.

For some cruises, passengers will travel in a single tall ship, but for many they will travel as a group. The exact route of the cruise may vary for safety and other reasons.

We will notify you which ship you will board when you receive your boarding pass at the registration point, 30 minutes before departure.

Ships will be motoring in the harbour but put on sails when the ship hits open water. We will sail as much as possible depending on the weather circumstances.
Every evening during the event there will be a spectacular fireworks display at 9:40 pm. All ships will stay on the river during this spectacle, providing you a magnificent view on the fireworks, the ships, and the shore side and its spectators.

Tall Ships are on average 80-100 year old ships with less facilities for disabled. Nonetheless, our piers and larger Tall Ships are accessible for disabled people. Off course every ship has sanitary fittings on board.
At this early point in time we do not know which ship will sail at what time. Please announce if you prefer a more accessible ship when you register in the reception area before boarding. We will try to arrange the most accessible ship that leaves at that moment. The ticket fee for disabled people is the same as the regular ticket price.
  • All ships are fully inspected by the British Food and Health Inspection.
  • Each captain has been fully trained and holds a PEC license.
  • Each ship has its own full insurance, including for all passengers.
  • The ships are built for sailing on open sea and therefore are completely safe.
  • All ships meet international safety requirements set by MCA.
You will be more comfortable aboard wearing flat shoes; high heeled shoes are not advised. There will be more breeze on board than on land, so do bring a jacket or coat. Sunscreen and a hat on hot days are recommended.
The registration point opens 45 minutes before departure. If you arrive earlier, you can visit the festival. The Tall Ships Races programme of activity will feature a wide variety of art forms that will entertain visitors to the city during the visit of the Tall Ships, between Wednesday, July 11 and Saturday, July 14.
Actors, musicians and dancers from across the UK and beyond will entertain people in event zones across the city in a programme funded by National Lottery through Arts Council England. Local artists will also be given a platform to perform.
If it rains, passengers may shelter in the interior saloons or underneath the awnings on the outside decks. In extreme circumstances, for example extreme fog or storms, the cruise might not take place.
All ships must leave on time, due to a tight sailing schedule. If you are late and you will miss your trip, or are unable to attend, your ticket will be void. Please note that tickets are not transferable to another trip and are non-refundable.
The Tall Ships Races are the biggest international ocean races for Sail Training ships. There will be around 40 old Tall Ships in Sunderland for the start of this event.

History of the race:
The Tall Ships Races have been an annual event since 1956 in which numerous Tall Ships from all over the world take part. The event is intended to introduce young people under the age of 25 to the sea and sailing on traditional ships. Half of the crew is therefore between 15 and 25 years old.

In 1956 the first race between 20 ships was organized by Bernard Morgan, a lawyer from London. The race started in Torqua, Devon and finished in Lisbon. The interest from the public turned out to be so overwhelming that the organizers set up the Sail Training International Association to organize more of these competitions in the following years.
